Today my husband had back surgery. Yup, that's right. We still cannot believe it. Two days ago we went in to the spine clinic for a surgical consult and the surgeon came in, looked at this image and said, "Whoa, it looks like a bomb went off in your back!" Surgery then set for 2 days later...
Here's the scoop:
Seth never had an injury to his back, but 2 years ago he started running to help him lose weight. After losing 70 pounds he slowed his running down because he started to have lower back pain. In March 2012 he had his first MRI of his lower back. The images showed a slight herniated/bulging disc. He went through a course of steroid injections for the pain, a few different prescriptions, numerous chiropractor visits, and daily winces while tying his shoes, dressing, etc. On his 33rd birthday, 12/5/12 he had another MRI and you can clearly see above why he had surgery today. He had a ruptured disc (with about 30% of the disc protruding from its normal space) pushing on his nerve. In the past month he started noticing right leg (to foot) numbness. The back pain/discomfort progressed just about daily. So, the surgical consult appointment couldn't come fast enough, and alas, the surgery!
